If you're an articles-only reader who wants quiet and trusts a 17-year-old company, stay on the free tier with a clear conscience. Nothing below, mine included, reads long articles more pleasantly.

Why people look for an alternative anyway

1. The price doubled. In May 2026, Premium jumped from $2.99 to $5.99/month ($59.99/year). That was the first hike in nine years, and a fair trigger to re-shop.
